Measuring phone enquiries: a call-button click or a real customer conversation?

The short answer

A phone-button click does not prove that a call connected or that a suitable customer conversation occurred. Report clicks, actual conversations, suitable enquiries and sales separately. Identify which stage the technical measurement can observe and use an authorised, brief business record for the remaining stages.

Define the event before calling it a conversion
RecordWhat it showsWhat it does not prove
Phone-button clickAn interaction towards starting a callConnection or conversation
Actual conversationA conversation with the business occurredSuitability or sale
Suitable service enquiryThe need matches the business scopeAn accepted quote
Sales outcomeThe business separately confirmed an outcomeEvery click became a sale

Write down the event definition first

A phone event in a report can fire when someone taps a button, when a call connects or when a business records an outcome. These are different observations. Make the definition an early deliverable of an Advertising Service review. Google explains that different conversion types can have separate conversion actions. This does not make a click equivalent to a sale. Name the reported event in ordinary language, such as phone-button click, so that decision makers know what the number means.

Do not assume technical availability in Türkiye

Google call reporting uses Google forwarding numbers and can provide details such as duration and connection where supported. Türkiye was not listed in the official availability table reviewed on 12 October 2026. Do not promise this method for every Turkish business. Check the current account, number and method eligibility before implementation. Measuring clicks on a website telephone link does not, by itself, supply call duration or connection information.

Ask the sales team for a small outcome record

An existing CRM or authorised work record may be sufficient. Consider the date, responsible person, general enquiry topic and outcome status. Suitable enquiry, out-of-scope question, existing customer and quote requested are possible categories. If the advertising source is not technically established, label a customer-provided source as self-reported. Do not make recording conversations or collecting personal information the default. Repeat calls from one person should not become multiple new customers.

Walk through a fictional service-business example

One visitor taps the mobile telephone button but cancels the call or receives no answer. Another reaches the business and asks about an unavailable service. A third discusses a suitable service and requests a quote. Combining all three as sales conversions obscures the decision. This is a fictional workflow, not campaign evidence. When a technical event cannot be matched to a business outcome, report the two datasets separately instead of inventing a connection.

Test the journey under realistic conditions

With business-owner permission, use an explicitly labelled test to check the mobile telephone link. Review wrong numbers, unavailable hours, duplicate events and repeated taps. A test conversation is not a customer enquiry. The duplicate-counting approach in the form measurement test guide can support the review, but the channels observe different stages. Changes to measurement, privacy choices or telephone numbers require their own authorised implementation.

Avoid making budget decisions from one signal

More clicks without more suitable conversations do not establish that an advertisement is necessarily poor. Examine service scope, answer capacity, number accessibility and source uncertainty together. A long conversation is not automatically a good lead. Assess enquiry suitability against actual needs and services. Weekly reports should show the technical observation, confirmed suitable enquiries and unknown sources. With low volumes, choose the next controlled test rather than declaring a definitive performance result.

A starting checklist

  • Is the event trigger documented?
  • Are country and account eligibility verified?
  • Are clicks and conversations separate?
  • Are tests excluded from customer outcomes?
  • Are repeat callers deduplicated?
  • Is a short business outcome record available?
  • Are unknown sources visible?
